Every Day I Write the Book

Are you feeling overwhelmed with your divorce or child custody life event? With an experienced yet compassionate divorce and child custody attorney, such as Sabra Janko and her awesome team, we can assist with alleviating those overpowering feelings you may be experiencing. I’m here today to offer some opinions on what I think would also help along the way.

I was cleaning out my closet recently, when I came across a bin that was fairly heavy despite its small size. When I opened the lid, I saw quite an impressive collection of my journals. Flipping through them, and reading some of what I wrote, it’s interesting to see how far I’ve come in life. Some of the journals go back twenty five years ago!

I love journal writing. It’s been effective in so many ways. Most were either marble or spiral notes books, others were cherry-picked at a discount store or Hobby Lobby because the journal spoke to me. I also have written journals on word documents. Either method works quite well.

So you may have a lot on your mind, to a point where you feel like your brain is going to explode. That’s where journal writing comes in. Writing down your thoughts, feelings, worries, and angst is a great way to off-load the burdens that can take over your mind. The act of writing (or typing), is like therapy, spilling your thoughts to paper as you would a therapist. I always feel relieved after a journal session. Then I can rest easy, enjoy the remainder of my day, or sleep better after I put the pen down, tuck the journal away in a safe spot then switch off the lights.

Currently, there are two journals I’d like to share and recommend with you which has been a big help for me. One is serious, and the other is very humorous. The more serious one is called ‘Trauma Recovery Journal: Reflective Prompts and Evidence Based Practices to Help You Recover, Heal and Thrive’, by Trudy-Gilbert-Eliot. For a while, I avoided this one because that meant I had to take a trip down memory lane, going to back to my childhood and drudging up the past. I wasn’t ready for that. Until one day, I took the journal to the Garden of the Gods visitors center, grabbed a coffee from the café then started to read through the prompts and eventually put pen to paper. I had to dig deep and that is what this journal does, asking questions to help you find those buried memories and feelings. Sometimes, in order to go forward, you do have to look back and this book encourages you to do that, thus revealing what made you the person you are today. It helped me get a better understanding of myself of how I developed certain fears and behavior patterns. It made me remember things that are never on the surface of my consciousness. A lot of ah-ha moments for sure. Despite having to write about not so pleasant things from the past, I felt light as a feather after I paused at a certain point. It’s still in the works but what a great beginning to a healing journey.

The other journal I took with me on that same day was called, ‘Let That Sh*t Go: A Journal for Leaving Your Bullsh*t Behind and Creating a Happy Life for Yourself’ by Monica Sweeny. When I saw the title, I was dying with laughter! I was like, ‘I need this book in my life!’ It was nice to balance out the more serious journal. The prompts where short and funny, leaving me giggling to myself and delighted. If you’re not easily offended by explicative and provocative words, I highly recommend this one. It’s definitely a more light-hearted approach to trauma recovery.

Check them out next time you’re at a bookstore or on Amazon’s website. Happy Journaling!
